The US government said 18 January it is abandoning itsdeployment of so-called backscatter technology machines produced byRapiscan because the company could not meet deadlines to switch togeneric imaging with so-called Automated Target Recognitionsoftware, the TSA said. Instead, the TSA will continue to use anddeploy more millimetre wave technology scanners produced by L-3Communications, which has adopted the generic-outline standard.
Due to its inability to deploy non-imaging Automated TargetRecognition (ATR) software by the Congressionally-mandated June2013 deadline, TSA has terminated part of its contract withRapiscan, the TSA said in a statement to Wired. By June 2013travellers will only see machines which have ATR that allow forfaster throughput.
